ここ数年で僕が聴いた中で、最もポップで楽しい曲じゃないかなあ、と思っています。日本向けに訳詞をつけたMVを作ってくれています（ということで和訳はしなくて大丈夫（笑。

ネットで調べてみると、”ミニマム・ファンク・バンド”なんてカテゴライズされていますが、最小限の編成でファンキーなサウンドをやるグループということなんでしょうね。
メンバーはジョー・ダート（ベース）、ウッディ・ゴス（キーボード）、ギター、ドラムやキーボードなどマルチ・プレイヤーのジャック・ストラットンとテオ・カッツマンの4人。
彼らは、”打ち込み”が圧倒的に主流のいま、1960年や70年代のスタジオ・ミュージシャンたちへのリスペクトを反映させた音楽作りをしています。
例えば、注目のシンガー、ジョーイ・ドーシックをメインに迎えたこの曲では、まさにレジェンドであるミュージシャン、デヴィッド・T・ウォーカー（ギター）とジェームス・ギャドソン（ドラム）が参加しています。こういう試みは素晴らしいですね。

しかし、彼らは単なる古き良き音楽を愛好する通好みの面々ではなく、2014年にはSpotifyに無音の音源をアップして200万円くらい売り上げて、自分たちのツアー資金にしたり、今年はクラウドファンディングを使って、カーネギー・ホールでのライヴの2枚組アルバムを発売するなど、ユニークな曲者っぷりも存分に発揮しています。
さて、「Animal Spirits」という言葉ですが、単に動物的な本能のことかなと思ったのですが、そこから派生した経済用語として知られているみたいで、経済学者のケインズが唱えたものらしいです。
投資の動機となる"将来に対する主観的な期待"のことを指すようで、衝動や野心から時として予測不能で不合理な行動をする心理もそれにあたるようです。
この歌では、”彼女はアニマル・スピリッツを持っている”と歌っているので、投資が好き、ということじゃなく”予測不能な不合理な行動をとる”という風に理解するのがよさそうです。
アニマル・スピリッツなんて言葉を飄々とポップソングに使うあたりも、なかなかの曲者だと思います。
